Abc Nuclear Power Plant

The Abc nuclear power plant is located approximately 65 miles southwest of Xyz. It was built on Abc Acre land. The ABC nuclear power plant relies on the Xyz as a source of water for cooling. The two-unit nuclear plant has the capacity to supply a million homes on normal days and during times of high demand the plant is able to supply 1.2 million ABC homes.

In the event of a nuclear event, it is likely that the surrounding environment together with the immediate community will be affected. In case of a nuclear event the surrounding water systems are likely to be contaminated and water shortages are also likely to be experienced. Nuclear reactors consume large quantities of water. For each reaction to take place millions of gallons of water are usually used up. The plant releases dangerous chemicals into Lake Abc such as Biocide, Algaecide and corrosion inhibitors. Only a small fraction of treated water is released into the lake (Glasson et al.11). The water shortage will affect cities and towns during drought season. With the rise of global warming the water systems will be too hot to even play as a cooling agent for the plant. In case of an accident there is bound to be huge fires and explosions that will completely destroy the immediate environmental surroundings.

Apart from damages caused by fires and explosions, the workers’ health together with the emergency teams are at great risks. Usually, when humans are exposed to certain limits of radiation, they are highly likely to experience acute radiation syndrome within hours of exposure. The injury depends with the proximity to the site of reaction. These radiations causes skin diseases accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea and the end stage being death. Radiation also damages the DNA cells. This means the parts of the body that have many dividing cells are likely to be affected and injured. Such areas include the gut area, bone marrow and the skin (Pabby 28). These parts are at great risk of damage due to the radiation. High levels of radiation doses cause brain cell damage. Less severe damage can be treated overtime. The increased awareness concerning nuclear attacks by terrorists has inspired numerous researchers together with doctors to look for a way cell damage could be repaired after damage.

The Abc nuclear plant has well set evacuation plans that would be put into action in case of a nuclear accident. The plan factors in wind speed and traffic speed of the fleeing community. These factors are guided by mathematical formulas which are believed to provide the community with the necessary evacuation avenues. The policy of the plans indicates that those within a 2mile radius to the plant are expected to leave first. The families are expected to carry with them phone book. Every neighborhood within a 10 mile radius is given a letter indicating evacuation routes (Wall et al 382). School children would be evacuated to host schools which are away from the evacuation systems. Those outside the 10 mile radius do not have to move unless the radiation is dangerous.
